My Students

Chances are when you meet a stranger or pass by someone in the hallway it is not difficult for you to offer them a greeting or shake their hand. Unfortunately, many students today struggle with social disorders and lack the ability and confidence to perform these simple everyday activities.

Our school is located in rural eastern North Carolina.

Many of our students struggle with social anxieties and disorders such as Asperger's, autism, and ADHD. Students with disorders like these struggle with focusing on classroom tasks, maintaining meaningful relationships, and conflict resolution. Since we are in such a rural area, school is frequently the only place these students are able to receive services which address these concerns.

My Project

As the school counselor, I would like to begin a social skills group structured around building with Legos. The target demographic for this group will be boys in grades 2-5 struggling with mild to severe social disorders. Each week students will meet to learn about a new social skills topic such as making friends, conflict resolution, or maintaining conversations. Then, they will break up into smaller teams to develop these skills through teamwork and cooperation. Each team of students will work together to build an assigned Lego creation and then they will share their creations with the other groups. The purpose of this social skills group is to help students with common difficulties learn and develop their skills in a safe, nonjudgmental, and fun environment.

Students who are challenged by disorders such as ADHD are constantly seeking stimulation.

Legos are an excellent way to maintain their attention. This type of activity is also an effective method of helping students maintain focus, practice effectively working as a team, and develop the skills necessary for everyday functioning in school and at home.
