My Students

I am an Alaskan in my first year teaching middle school science in Salt Lake City, Utah. I believe that science class should be hands-on as much as possible to make science memorable, fun, and accessible to students with learning disabilities and non-English speakers. This grant would cover LEGO Mindstorms Kits that could be reused year after year to impact thousands of students.

I have large class sizes with students from all over the world.

I teach at a Title I school where many students face unfortunate challenges at home. Many come to school distracted by problems at home, and school is a warm safe place with supportive teachers. With all the difficulties they face outside of the classroom, I make it my mission to make science class a reason to come to school every day. I hope that my engaging science class helps them to love school. Hands-on learning and exciting demonstrations also really help students who are still learning to speak English. Most of my students show up every day, and I want to make sure their education is as rigorous and interesting as possible.

My Project

I have never seen students more engaged in learning than when they problem-solve while coding a robot to perform a specific task. Last year I taught in a small school in Alaska where I had access to an entire class set of the LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Kits. The experience was so transformational for my 7th and 8th graders that I want to provide that same educational experience for the students in my new school. I am officially trained by LEGO to provide challenging middle school level robotics lessons.

This grant would allow every student, including Special Ed and non-English speakers, to get their hands on the very special projects that these LEGO kits could enable.

Our school already has a small LEGO Robotics club that attracts a small group of highly motivated students to stay after school. This set of LEGO kits would not be part of the Robotics club. Instead, it would be part of the regular science class that ALL STUDENTS are required to take.

The reason I feel it is important to provide this coding opportunity to all students is because of what I witnessed in my classroom last year in Alaska. Students who usually struggled with regular science assignments, Special Ed students, and students with regular behavior problems suddenly straightened up and applied themselves to the robotics in a way I had never seen. The students who normally struggled in more typical assignments became the leaders on their teams with the robotics. These students are not the ones who normally would go out of their way to sign up for LEGO Robotics club, they need it in their regular science classroom to light their fire and engage every student. Finally, developing a passion for coding could lead students to pursue a great career in computer science.
