This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students who take Chemistry here have a variety of backgrounds and socioeconomic situations. We have students from many countries and cultures. Our classes are heterogeneously mixed with all achievement and ability levels included in the same classroom.

Many students see Chemistry as "hard" or "challenging" and I want to change that to "interesting" and "exciting" and awesome!

The kids need a creative outlet and need to "play" with chemistry to really embrace it. I integrate technology often, but sometimes old school works better.

The kids really need as many opportunities as possible to do hands-on activities in addition to labs to work with the periodic table and the elements and sometimes it is a challenge because much of our curriculum is very abstract. Working to have students embrace the importance of chemistry in every aspect of life is an ongoing process.

I want the students to develop thinking skills in chemistry that will last them a lifetime.

My Project

I plan to have students use legos to explore atoms, molecules, and reactions. If they have the baseplates to hold the pieces, the modeling will be clearer and easier for them to work with and explain. Being able to concretely work with manipulatives helps the students to make sense of topics that are hard to understand because they find visualizing challenging. In the last couple of years, I have had kits in class and they love making videos and creating photo-stories explaining what they learned, now they need to be able to do it at home!
