Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students take what makes them different, and turn it into something incredibly beautiful. They think more with pictures and speak more with their hands. The students in my classroom all have some sort of degree of hearing loss and many use assisted listening devices such as cochlear implants and hearing aids, although a big focus is using sign language alongside oral communication for optimal language opportunities.

I am absolutely in awe of them, and I am forever grateful to be a small part of their lives.

They prove to me day after day that they are strong enough to keep moving forward despite the obstacles they face. We love exploring the world of math and science because of how visual it is.

My Project

The past four years of teaching, as well as my STEM education degree, have led me to come up with one solid conclusion: students learn when they are having fun. That and the fact that there is a huge demand for computer science careers are what fuel me to provide my students with as many coding, engineering, and engaging opportunities as I possibly can.

I want to prepare my students for the future, and the future is STEM.

One problem that I face is that myself and my school lack the proper resources to really provide the students with enough opportunities to learn computer science skills. With these LEGO kits and organizational bins, we will be able to inspire the minds of students who may not know what they want to do when they grow up or are not as interested in other subjects. I've seen students who struggle in math, reading and writing really excel when they get the opportunity to be creative.

I aim to use these pieces as productively as I can while I teach them the engineering design process, how to code, and most importantly, how to have fun while they learn. Computer scientists can earn up to $96,000 per year. Please help give my students a chance at being successful in a career that they truly enjoy.
