My Project

The students in my class are all on the Autism Spectrum and they love to get creative using manipulatives. Students rotate through centers throughout the day and they all love to use the small LEGO set we have. But, as time goes by a lot of our pieces have gone missing.

The LEGO sets would not only allow students to work together and engage in STEM activities, but the different sets would allow students with varried learning needs to participate.

The LEGO sets would give my students the opportunity to expand on STEM activities that we do in the classroom. For our non-verbal students, the LEGO sets also provide an opportunity to get creative and express themselves. In addition, all of the students need support with their fine motor skills and LEGOs are a great way to help them build those skills which transfers to handwriting skills and life skills.

LEGOs provide an opportunity for students to engage in problem-solving activities, sorting, categorizing, analyzing, building, and so much more. My hope is that these LEGO sets will support students build independent work skills using the manipulatives with it, joint-attention skills as a highly preferred item in the classroom, and work on interpersonal communication skills as they work with peers to build LEGO structures. All of which are necessary skills for success.
