Help me give my students the opportunity to bring creativity into our classroom with these community and fantasy based LEGO Sets designed to cultivate creative thinking and story telling!
I have recently begun my second year of teaching in a wonderful school district that values not only education, but personal and emotional growth as well. This year I am lucky to have 21 students comprised of 10 boys and 11 girls. My group this year is full of unique dynamics and personality that provides its own successes and challenges daily!
With education rapidly changing, it can often be difficult for a teacher to keep up with the changing trends and best practices with the limited budget of schools.
My goal as a teacher is to always provide students with the resources they need to be the most successful they can possibly be. This requires a classroom full of resources and activities that provide a hands-on learning experience that allows students to be immersed in education in a meaningful way.
My Project
Our district has recently implemented a new reading curriculum. With this curriculum, we have been given four themed units to teach throughout the year. For my second graders, our last two units of the year are Animal Stories and Jobs in Our Community. During our Animal Stories unit, students read different fairy tales and stories about animals. They are then tasked with creating their own stories that include a strong setting, characters, plot, etc. Last year, I found that my students really struggled to come up with creative ideas. When students did come up with an idea, they struggled to picture and explain what their setting and characters looked like.
My hope is that these fantasy LEGO sets will help them cultivate the creativity needed to not only understand the elements of a story, but to build their own as well.
Students will begin the unit by exploring the Fantasy and Scenery LEGOs and building their setting and characters. The visual representation and hands-on exploration will greatly improve their ability to describe their setting and characters to their readers. In addition, it will increase engagement in the unit.
Since our last unit of the year is Jobs in Our Community, I would like for my students to collaboratively build a community with the Community LEGO set. Students will work together to determine what makes up a community and see the people who help a community thrive! Again, I strongly believe the hands-on aspect of the LEGOs will not only deepen my students' knowledge of a community, but also heighten their engagement.
Thank you so much in advance for helping bring creativity into my classroom!
