This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My aspiring "legal eagles" need to see their individual performances preparing for their Mock Trial competition.
My students, who are typical urban high school students have become involved in a city-wide Mock Trial competition. What they lack in formal training or familiarity with the legal system, they make up for in their enthusiasm and commitment. They definitely lack any connections through family or community with any attorneys, judges or bar associations.
Having a digital camcorder to record individuals preparing their opening/closing statements OR witnesses practicing their testimonies would be invaluable. "A picture..." would make it much easier to teach students the lessons of speaking more slowly, making eye contact or eliminating useless hand gestures or "like" or "when".
Perhaps with a video camera, our students can earn enough points to advance beyond the first round of competition and make a "name" for themselves and our school in the larger competition.
