Left-handed Students Should Not Be Left Behind!

Help me give my students left-handed scissors, executive function learning games, time-management tools, sensory fidgets, and handwriting activities.

My Project

My students receive Occupational Therapy (OT) as part of their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). They smile from ear to ear when it is their turn to attend their occupational therapy sessions. They take part in a variety of activities that are meaningful to them, while practicing classroom skills. These activities enable them to regulate their nervous system and maximize their independence in school.

Having tools that are built for them, instead of those that are generic and don't fit their needs, is so important.

Additionally, having fun tools to achieve their occupational therapy goals works wonders in motivating students to attempt new tasks that otherwise would feel difficult and overwhelming.

Left-handed students are often overlooked, since standard scissors are actually designed for use in the right hand and are a poor fit when used in the left. The left-handed scissors would ensure that left handed students have access to a pair of scissors that fits their hand and is effective when used from the left side. This is necessary for them to have an equal chance to be successful.

Additionally, the fun letter formation tools - clay letter mats and magic writing boards - would make handwriting practice more motivating. The stencils would facilitate fine-motor precision writing movements. The blotter boards would provide stability to their papers while writing. The fidget spinners would provide students with the sensory input, and thereby relaxation and focus, they require for participation. Lastly, for students who struggle with executive function, the pile-up sequence game would support their focus and organization skills. The timers would support their time management during assignments. All these tools would allow my students' school experience to be more successful and joyful.
