Do you remember middle school when science was still an adventure? Observing a caterpillar's metamorphosis, planting a seed and watching it grow, making circuits and electric motors? My students look forward to these investigations, too!
All students today face many challenges.
My students in particular are struggling to overcome poverty, family addiction, mental illness, homelessness, and language barriers. Our school community is where they feel safe and loved. Often, we see behavior issues around vacations that indicate to us that our students would much rather be in school. And as they get to the upper grades, they will tell you that being home is boring and "no fun." Oftentimes, they can't go outside to play because of the instability of their neighborhood or they have no supervision and are left to fend for themselves.
Teaching in a science requires lots of varied materials, anything from guppies to density cubes to owl pellets and latex gloves.
Funds for everyday items such as pencils and notebooks are often overlooked or there's just not enough to sustain classes throughout a school year.
My Project
My students love going out into the garden. It doesn't really matter what the task is, they just enjoy being out of the classroom. I can't say as I blame them! Growing vegetables for their End of Year Garden Party in June, is a ritual my 7th grade students look forward to doing.
In order to harvest the vegetables before summer vacation, we need to start our spring crop indoors.
This requires lots of indoor LED lighting. LED lights use much less energy than filament bulbs and do not give off as much heat. Perfect for our indoor grow houses.
