Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a kindergarten ICT class, 40% special education students and 60% regular education students.
My class is a class of 25 kindergartners with unique personalities and varying academic levels ranging from kindergarten to second grade.
My students are part of a larger school community of about 700 students. Compared to other New York City Schools, we are much smaller. While our small size has a lot of pros there are also many cons; one being the lack of space that our school has along with a smaller budget. While we try to use our budget wisely providing a great number of resources for our students, we often do not have many of the things that we need to help all our students be successful.
My Project
Writing can be so daunting to a small 5 year old who is just starting school. I plan to use these tools to help slowly ease into handwriting by first exploring the letter formation with the sensory tools. These hands-on materials include roll a dough letters, stamp and screen letters, as well as wood pieces to make capital letters. By first exploring letters in this multi-sensory way kids will then be ready for "handwriting without tears." Since we already have the hands-on materials, at this time we are only looking to get the workbooks and teacher kit. I have seen this program work wonders with individual students and they get so excited about writing. Please help us get the tools we need to fully do this program with our whole class.
A donation to this project will help students gain confidence in learning the alphabet and handwriting.
Proper handwriting will help for many years to come in their school career with a great start in Handwriting Without Tears in Kindergarten.
