As a teacher who works at a lower economic status school district, being able to have enough money to purchase manipulatives for all students becomes difficult. This past year I have had to print manipulatives and cut them for each lesson. Using manipulatives makes a huge difference with each lesson whether it is our math block or reading block. 1st grade is such a crucial grade level. It is the first year little minds are expected to deepen their knowledge in math and reading skills.
The items I have selected will help us have a hands-on learning environment.
When learning how to add numbers greater than 1-10, the number lines are a great way to help 1st graders little minds see how we are getting bigger. The two tone counters are a fantastic way to help the students use one color to count the total and then flip to the other color when they are subtracting. Having these manipulatives not only keeps the students engaged but it also helps them truly grasp the foundational skills needed to continue their knowledge each year in math. 1st grade is truly building the foundational phonics level. The reading kits hold all the essentials needed to help support these young readers.
Lastly, no one enjoys sitting at a desk all day. School should be fun and feel relaxing. The flex seating chairs for the ground will give the students an opportunity to find a spot on the ground and feel comfortable and yet still work. There has been plenty of research done proving how flex seating can be a game changer in the classroom for students learning.
