Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a life skills classroom that focuses on academics and functional skills. We have a class of unique individuals that are fun and spunky. Our class has students from Kinder to 5th grade and they range in age from 5-11 years old.
Many of our students are non-verbal and need materials that allow them to make choices and work on their imagination and creativity.
Students in our class can be unsure of their abilities and we like to encourage them to be as independent as possible.
In our room, it's OK to make mistakes as long as we try.
My Project
The Osmo system gives immediate feedback and will encourage students to continue reviewing the skills already taught.
Osmo is a system that attaches to our iPads and allows students to use manipulatives in real-time.
There are games about basic counting, spelling and word building, and also money. The students will love the ability to work on letter building and math skills with the hands-on materials and the help of the Osmo monster. The fact they are able to work on these skills without the help of the teachers helps build their confidence and increases the motivation to work independently.
All of these materials can be used throughout our center time each day and allow for a more focused/purposeful independent learning time.
