Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a group of energetic, super curious, and fun loving Pre-k students. My classroom is predominately African American with low economics (95% below the poverty line). As a result of this unfortunate circumstance, my students are not exposed to activities that require critical thinking skills and creativity.
Almost every student in our school deal with challenging circumstances at home.
Our neighborhood consist of single parent homes, grandparent raising their grandchildren, and children who live in foster care or shelters.
My Project
My students will use manipulatives to carry out or support what they have learned during their lesson. Center time is one of the best opportunities for me to see if they understand the lesson, if they need one on one time, or if the lesson needs to be repeated. This is a quick way for me to get around and see those that struggle at a glance. Manipulatives are helpful tools that allow me to observe student progress.
Visual and kinesthetic learners are able to grow academically because of the hands on experience with manipulatives.
The use of play dough as a manipulatives is one way my student will learn to form letters by having them trace out the letters or numbers on mats.
Another way my students will learn with the use of sight words manipulatives. The Sight-Word Journal will be used daily which would involves review of old words, introduction of new words, and journaling. The Sight-Word magnets can be used in a center rotation as an opportunity to build sentence structure.
Manipulatives are not only educational, but they are fun to use, making learning memorable which improves students' school lives.
