My Students

My students are part of a new school that will be starting its fourth year of operations in August 2019. It will be my first year at the school, so I know very little about my kids, except that there are very few supplies with which to teach them the fundamentals of math. The school's current math scores lag considerably behind the state average relative to proficiency (only 47% of students were proficient in math, while the NC State average is 57%). I am hoping this project will help improve this metric by providing tools for hands-on learning!

My Project

I plan to use the legos to introduce and reinforce the concept of fractions and how fractions are used operationally. Given the legos, students will be able to physically trade out different pieces to find a common denominator with which to combine (and separate) fractions with different bases (a large piece with 6 studs can be replaced by 3 smaller pieces with 2 each, etc.). In the 5th grade, maybe half of my students will be developmentally ready to think abstractly about fractions. ALL will benefit from being able to manipulate (see and touch) the legos to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts I will be teaching.
