Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students in an Emotional Support (ES) classroom. They are various grades (9-12), very diverse, and our school has an 89% lower socioeconomic status population. Some students also speak English as a second language. Unfortunately, this particular group of students has a large percentage that have run-ins with the law and many of my students have been arrested for a variety of reasons. Some have been locked up, others have been in alternative education placements and a good number of them are on probation. There's never a dull moment in my classroom!
If you are not familiar with students in an ES population, they all have a diagnosis within the mental health spectrum, mostly Emotional Disturbance, but some students have social anxieties.
They all need to learn coping mechanisms for their emotional battles, so much of our instruction focuses on behavioral instruction in addition to curricular needs.
ES students have the worst lifetime outcomes in America, with 40% of them dropping out of school. If they do not get help or get a diploma for a better future, the outcomes are very grim (drug abuse, homelessness, etc.). Help me make them heard, understood, and successful!
My Project
My students are not traditional learners. They need hands-on learning opportunities such as learning about landscapes and vistas (i.e. in historic battles) and then the opportunity to creatively interpret what they learn. The K'Nex learning set can help students implement science skills and concepts they learn in physical science while having fun with the materials.
In addition to academics, a primary focus in my classroom is social and emotional learning where art materials and games can serve as rewards for hard work.
Games are a great way to work on soft skills the students will need in the job setting, such as teamwork and problem solving.
