This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher in a low-income public school district in Massachusetts. As a bilingual Special Education high school teacher, I am constantly trying to find ways to engage students in reading with the appropriate supports. These items would be extremely helpful.
We have limited supplies, but are still expected to prepare students for the MCAS and other graduation and life requirements. A lot of money is spent out of pocket on materials, which is getting to be a burden that I am having trouble supporting alone.
I am requesting 5 Spanish-English Dictionaries, 5 English Dictionaries and 5 sets of low-level, high interest reading books (The Bluford High Series) for our class library and to use as part of the curriculum. By getting these resources, I would be able to provide for vocabulary development and engaging books for my students which will hopefully launch them into a life-long love of reading! Many do not have books at home or have ever owned their own book.
Please realize how much these materials would help these students who are struggling with language barriers and cognitive disabilities. Many live in shelters or other low-income housing projects, so imagine the escape we could provide with the ability to read! Thank you in advance for your generous gift!
