Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a large, Title I school with a diverse student population, serving high numbers of economically disadvantaged children. We educate over 1200 kids from pre-K to 5th grade. Resources are limited, particularly with technology as most classrooms do not have their own computer resources. I teach Second graders English in a dual language program (Spanish-English), designed to teach kids fluency in both languages.
“Teaching in the Internet age means we must teach tomorrow’s skills today.” – Jennifer Fleming
My students are curious by nature. We need to embrace technology to make learning more engaging. Because when students are engaged and they are interested, that's where learning takes place. While they are exploring, they are discovering. This inspires my students to become creative and independent learners.
My Project
We need four Chromebooks to enhance our Research Center within the classroom for children to become more innovative and research areas that interest them. My students will be able to use the Research Center during their free choice time and during reading lessons to utilize reading programs and research topics of interest from class discussions, which will improve literacy and enhance skills that children inevitably use in other areas.
Research skills are a very effective tool in the attainment of information in all subjects and have always been a valuable teaching method for me as my students begin to learn about research techniques.
The students are drawn to new things and they want to explore them. I am requesting five chrome books to enhance a Research Center within my classroom. With this technology, I will able to incorporate research skills into my students’ lessons to better enhance their learning. It will make complex concepts more accessible and enjoyable. It will facilitate independence and allow my students, a mix of primary English and Spanish speakers from various backgrounds, to learn about new, exciting subjects in a fun, easy way. Additionally, the Research Center will allow me to teach the kids how to access on-line reading programs designed to enhance literacy that they could use at home or at the library. These resources will help the to improve their reading skills and develop a lifelong love of reading. It will also keep them current with technology, which is imperative in a technology driven world.
For many of my students, their faces light up when they can independently learn and satisfy their own curiosity. For many of my students, their only exposure to technology is at school. This enhancement will help my students to share knowledge and information, communicate efficiently, and build learning communities.
