My students are inquisitive, energetic, and excited about learning ELA in a collaborative, STEAM-based, and student-centered environment. I currently teach students at multiple levels ranging from a 7th-grade inclusion class to an 8th-grade GT English I class. Students are encouraged to work together to improved understanding and build mastery of state standards and target skills in practical ways that are applicable to real-world scenarios.
Every day, my students are presented with the opportunity to take state standards and apply them in project-based, collaborative learning strategies.
For me, learning is about more than direct instruction. It is about equipping my students with the skills they need to become lifelong learners.
My Project
Helen Keller once said, "Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much." Dr. Ken Robinson echoed her sentiment stating, "Most great learning happens in groups." Students need the opportunity to engage in collaborative learning environments that build problem-solving and communication skills.
The purpose of this project is to help create a space where students can work and learn together using "pods" or collaborative seating using specialized desks designed for students to "do so much" together.
The desks in this project do not have attached seating, which makes arrangements more flexible and group-friendly. The tops are also designed as whiteboards that give students the opportunity to communicate and design together in a concrete way that supplements the use of technology without requiring it.
