Mrs. Burke from Charleston SC is requesting art supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need an easel, photo printer, and tools to make reading and writing fun.

My Title I school is located in a small city in the southeast. More than 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. My students are struggling readers in grades 1-2 who scored below the 25% on multiple assessments, are working below grade level standards, and have many obstacles, but deserve high expectations, highly effective teachers, and the best education.
As a Literacy Interventionist, my goal is for each student to catch up with their peers and meet grade level standards.
To achieve this, they need extra support learning to read and write. My students are excited, energetic, and eager to learn. My lessons build on their strengths. Starting with what they know helps my students feel comfortable to take risks and try out new things. My small group and individual lessons are fast-paced and targeted in order to accelerate learning. Students learn from their mistakes and take pride in their successes.
Teaching my students to be strong, effective readers and writers by creating authentic and engaging lessons keeps my students on track and motivated to learn. This will help them reach their goals, succeed in school, and become productive members of our community.
Students learn best when I use a variety of tools to engage and excite. My lessons are designed to build on strengths and accelerate learning. I include books, letter and word work, and writing.
When learning is fun, students blossom and feel proud of themselves for reaching their goals.
This request for an easel and magnetic letters, a photo printer and film, LCD tablets, and packs of stickers will help me engage students and individualize instruction. During letter and word work, students sort letters, identify patterns, segment words, and build on known sight words. The magnetic easel and letters will make materials readily available for word building, letter sorting and new word learning. The easel baskets will separate letters for learners and help me stay organized. The photo printer and film will be an exciting tool allowing me to print pictures of students and school activities. Students can use the pictures to create stories and write their own books creating more authentic opportunities for writing. The LCD tablets will aid in practicing letter formation and word construction. Students practice saying words, listening for sounds, and writing words before putting stories on paper. To learn sight words, students can use the LCD tablets to practice writing the word, erasing it, and writing it again improving fluency and building their bank of known words. To master beginning reading skills, I write personalized books. When my students are the characters and their interests are the topics they are excited about reading. The stickers can help me create simple books about students’ interests and students can choose stickers to create their own sticker storybooks.
The requested learning tools will be used every day. They will engage struggling learners, excite new readers and motivate budding writers. Your help will inspire success for struggling students.
