Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our 100 second graders will be busy learning to sing and perform for their second-grade play, "Bugz." They need to work on their music literacy skills along with their performance skills. They will need to have the CD for rehearsal, and the scripts for the play. They also need note-reading supplies.
Our eager second graders come from diverse backgrounds.
Many are from low-income families, and our music program represents a very special opportunity for them to engage in performing arts. Our program unifies learning, so that experiences are playful and rewarding. Yet, we develop a solid basis of skills so that our students are truly developing their knowledge of music and their overall academic aptitudes through music. Most of our students have demonstrated great interest in music, singing, dancing, and instrumental music. Our music literacy skills are part of this rich, comprehensive program. Our school serves a special needs population as well as regular education students. We have a large number of second-language learners, along with a population of students whose first language is English. We enjoy our diversity, and include American and English heritage music along with world music.
My Project
If this project is funded, our students will have some excellent resources to advance their learning of music notation, as they work on their Spring performance. In addition, we will be performing "Bugz" for the whole school and community, and this will be a very memorable performance opportunity for our 100 second graders. Our students will learn performance skills, songs, dances, instrumental pieces, and the use of elementary notation in learning rhythmic motives. This will be a wonderful and robust learning experience for them. These materials will be used for many years with many more of our large classes of primary students.
I know that our 100 second graders will love learning the music for this musical, and I know that the experience will be very rewarding for them as they develop their music literacy skills.
Achievement in the area of music is the most appealing and accessible area of the curriculum for many children, and their success in our music program feeds their success in work across the curriculum.
