This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a new public charter school. Our school promotes hands-on learning and focuses on meeting the needs and encouraging growth for all of our students. Since it is our second year, we have limited resources and are growing our materials.

My classroom has 20 wonderful students.

We are an inclusive class and have a wide range of diversity. We have students who receive services for special education, speech, and ESL. We work hard and focus on learning every day!

My Project

I am looking to help building reading and comprehension strategies with my kindergarten students.

Having leveled big books in the classroom will help my students learn how to use reading strategies.

We use leveled big books in shared reading. We read the same book for a total of 5 days. I model and teach the students how to use different reading strategies to read leveled text. The students practice as a class and then use those strategies to read independently.

The storytelling kits are a great way to build beginning comprehension strategies for students by allowing them to retell a story. During literacy stations, they will use the storytelling kits to retell stories read aloud in class. It is a fun way for them to develop their re-telling and sequencing skills which will assist in them becoming better readers and writers.
