I am looking to help building reading and comprehension strategies with my kindergarten students. Having leveled big books in the classroom will help my students learn how to use reading strategies. We use leveled big books in shared reading. We read the same book for a total of 5 days. I model and teach the students how to use different reading strategies to read leveled text. The students practice as a class and then use those strategies to read independently. The storytelling kits are a great way to build beginning comprehension strategies for students by allowing them to retell a story. During literacy stations, they will use the storytelling kits to retell stories read aloud in class. It is a fun way for them to develop their re-telling and sequencing skills which will assist in them becoming better readers and writers.
