My Students

My students are sophomores in high school. Most of my students are in my on-level sophomore class, others are in my honors sophomore class, and some are in my sophomore literature and composition class (a reading strategies class for struggling readers).

My students participate in Book Love, a student-first approach to foster stamina and intrigue in adolescent readers.

Among other things, Book Love involves students choosing whatever they want to read, ultimately cultivating lifelong readers who are hungry for their next book.

My Project

In order to learn to love reading again (or, perhaps, for the first time), students need books in which they see themselves. They need to connect to the books. They need books that challenge them, but not too much. Without this, students' success in reading is hindered.

I want reading to be a choice, not a chore.

They must be engaged, challenged, and, ultimately, supported. If students feel defeated by reading, we have not done our job. This list of books consists of high-interest, varied-level books for students to read. I believe in student choice, and these books will allow students to have several options to choose from.

Books like The Hate U Give and Girl in Translation deal with race and immigration, respectively, while Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Wonder address empathy through instances of bullying. Some books, like An Ember in the Ashes and Delirium, allow students to enter--and get lost in--a fantasy world.
