I teach in an urban high school where economic constraints hinder their learning. The district offers free breakfast and free lunch to our students. Many of the students read below grade level and this can impact their motivation in class. Behavior can be a hindrance on academic performance for many students and the use of punitive discipline is not affective any longer. Our staff is working to change the School Climate and instill Restorative Practices.
My students face a lot of adversity both in and out of the classroom.
They are hardworking and eager to learn. They need tools that will help make them college and career ready once they leave these halls. My students are creative, humorous and diverse and they deserve a chance to learn.
My Project
I have been attending Restorative Practice training throughout the school year and have been exposed to these amazing tools. It will be the responsibility of myself and the other Social and Emotional Learning team to train other staff members on Restorative Practices. Our main goal is to reduce punitive consequences and move more towards meaningful consequences that will teach our students how to fix and restore relationships.
Teaching students and staff how to build relationships, repair and fix relationships and maintain healthy relationships is key in schools today.
The school to prison pipeline is a sad reality in our society. Restorative Practice is not something we do as teachers, it is a mindset and a mentality that will help improve the overall school climate.
