Learning to Give When Giving Isn't Always Thought of
My students need materials for a community service project called, "Birthday in a Box." My students specifically need the books "Wonder"; and "Number the Stars", and other items to celebrate a birthday.
I am a teacher in a low income/ Appalachian school district where a majority of our students are on free and reduced lunch which means they come from low income households. I would love to say that my students have a deep empathy and understanding that others have a harder life than they do, but that is something that is taught rather than bred. With this project, I hope to instill the understanding that there are other children, women and men who have it much worse than most teens and pre-teens believe that they do.
Students need taught that holidays are not the only time that giving to others should be thought of and that opening their heart and giving freely can be so much more rewarding than receiving ever could be!
My students love to give at the holiday season, but I'd love for them to give all year long, but unfortunately not all of my students are able to provide extras for other students despite wanting to do so.
My Project
My students will be completing a service project called Birthday in a Box in March. It's not always possible for parents who are struggling to just get by to celebrate their child's birthday in a special and meaningful way.
By participating in the Birthday Giving Project, students will be helping to provide that important experience for a family with less by making them a "Birthday in a Box".
Boxes will contain a boxed cake, a can of icing, a birthday banner, a book, a bag of candy and snacks, and a $15 gift.
What I am funding specifically is 82 books, more specifically "Wonder" and "Number the Stars." These books are widely used across fifth and sixth grade curriculum across Ohio.
