Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work in a school for children with special education and the students in my classroom are students who primarily have a diagnosis of autism, and learn to communicate in different ways from their neurotypical peers. Through music exploration I have found my students to be the most eager to communicate. They get excited for music!
Music helps regulate my student's sensory systems, and creates opportunities to build an interest in communicating when they might otherwise choose to be silent.
I have watched my students laugh with joy when they hear their favorite songs, learn important core vocabulary, and understand emotions through music and instruments. We have some old, broken instruments that were donated to our classroom that our students have well loved and used every day. It is my hope that we can replenish our music cabinet and continue making milestones with our music classes!
