Learning to Adapt and Care Through The Wild Robot

Help me give my students a novel to read that builds on their love of reading, is engaging, and teaches them about adaptation.

My Project

My third-grade students are growing not only as readers, but also as thoughtful and compassionate individuals. I want to provide them with meaningful, engaging texts that help them better understand the world around them—and each other. The Wild Robot is the perfect story to do just that.

This exciting and heartwarming novel follows Roz, a robot who finds herself alone on a wild island and must learn how to survive.

As she observes the animals around her, Roz learns to adapt to her environment and begins forming relationships with the creatures she once feared.

Through Roz’s journey, students will explore important life lessons about caring for others, building relationships, and working together as a community. They will see how even someone who is very different can learn to show kindness, take responsibility, and make a positive impact on others. The story emphasizes that empathy and connection can be learned and developed over time.

This novel also provides a powerful opportunity for students to think about adaptation—how individuals change, grow, and adjust when faced with new challenges. As Roz learns to survive and eventually thrive, students will reflect on their own ability to adapt in new situations and support one another along the way.

With your support, my students will have access to a shared reading experience that strengthens their comprehension skills while also building empathy, resilience, and a sense of community. These are lessons that go far beyond the classroom and will stay with them for years to come.
