Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Computer science classes don't reflect the diversity of our community--we aim to change that! Females, students will disabilities, and ethnic minorities are currently vastly underrepresented in CS classes, but through active recruitment at local schools our class make a difference.

Our school is set up in various career clusters--each building houses a set of teachers who provide instruction in all content areas with an emphasis on the career pathway of that building.

Students come to our school seeking certifications and endorsements useful immediately after graduation (examples include vet tech, C++, and ProStart certifications). Our students, who primarily come from economically disadvantaged and/or minority homes, attend our school because of these nontraditional programs. The students in my computer science class are hard workers and have fallen in love with programming. Students have applied for and even won various awards and are engaged in yearlong computer science projects and competitions. They are eager to spread the word about computer science and build our program!

My Project

The Makey Makeys and Finch robots will be incredibly useful in helping our computer science students learn programming while teaching and recruiting younger students at the same time. The Makey Makeys will allow our students to take any conductive materials and use them to create a unique invention such as banana-operated piano keys, circuit-initiated cat-cameras, and more. The Finch robots are also very diverse--our students will use complex programming languages like Java as well as teach younger students to program the robots using simpler languages like Snap. Students will use programming to control the robots' movements, lights, and sounds. With these tools, our student will be able to visit local schools and spark interest in computer science. We will also use the tools to engage parents and students at open houses, parent nights, and family fun days. With these tools, we will spark interest in computer science and build a diverse class population!

Enabling our students to reach out to younger students and recruit for CS is beneficial all around.

Our students will build confidence in their programming, communication, and presentation skills while teaching a set of new skills to younger students. They will reach a wide population of students and be able to recruit a diverse group of them to CS programs in the city. Enrollment in such programs will provide all types of students with the vast opportunities associated with studying CS.
