Help me give my students the experiences that come from social pretend play. An enhanced sensory diet has been proven to improve cognition in children with autism as well as those with developmental delays.
All of my students have developmental delays and some of them have Autism. They are all very different; however, they all share a common love for STEM-related lessons and they love art. They are inquisitive by nature. They learn best through hands-on activities that are student-initiated.
All of my students lack the language and vocabulary skills necessary in order to make their wants and needs known.
My students come from low socioeconomic environments. Many do not own toys and lack the skill set to play appropriately. Research has shown that young children learn best through student-driven, hands-on activities. When I think about a childhood without toys it breaks my heart. Most don’t have the necessary supplies to be successful in school.
My Project
The items I chose are meant to expose the children in my classroom to as many opportunities to learn through play as possible. The toys and objects I have chosen can be integrated into child-directed learning situations that will help prepare them to be successful in kindergarten and beyond.
My students' language, social interaction and pre-academic skills will improve through social pretend play opportunities.
Research has shown that students learn best when lessons are child-driven. It is my hope that my children can improve these skills by participating in developmentally appropriate activities that are meant to improve their skill levels to a more age-appropriate level.
