This initiative is part of a significant annual art festival in my parish. I take great pleasure in sharing high-quality literature across various genres with my students. So far, we have read Mexikid, It Found Us, and The Lost Year.\r\n\r\nThrough Mexikid, my students have gained insights into Mexican American heritage and the dynamics of a large family. It Found Us served as our thrilling read and quickly became a class favorite. The students discovered how character development can lead to effective collaboration in solving a mystery, which is particularly engaging as the narrative is based on a true event: the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus train wreck. One student, who read ahead, was thrilled to return and share her findings about the actual event, having conducted her own research.\r\n\r\nIn The Lost Year, my students explored the Holodomor, a topic unfamiliar to many, with several having limited awareness of the Holocaust itself. One student with Russian ancestry, who speaks the language, proved invaluable in assisting with pronunciation and understanding. This book allowed us to delve deeply into a challenging historical period and the struggles faced by a particular group of people. Additionally, students connected with contemporary themes within the narrative, particularly those related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and learned the importance of preserving and sharing family stories.\r\n\r\nTo further engage the broader middle school population, I organized a book tasting event where these selections were showcased. The students were pleasantly surprised by the abundance of copies available and inquired whether I had purchased them all. They were amazed to learn that these books were generously donated by individuals committed to enhancing their reading experiences.\r\n\r\nHearing comments such as, \"I never knew I liked reading until now,\" and \"I woke up this morning excited for Novels class,\" fills my heart with joy as a school librarian. I am profoundly grateful to each person who has contributed to this initiative.","fullyFundedDate":1758670819855,"projectUrl":"project/developing-an-appetite-for-reading/9378504/","projectTitle":"Developing an Appetite for Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Rose","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1743297"},{"teacherId":3484790,"projectId":9550876,"letterContent":"The ArtBreak Battle of the Books is a lively literary competition at Shreveport's ArtBreak festival. Once school starts, students enthusiastically ask about the books and can't wait to start reading. We dedicate many hours to exploring and discussing these texts as we prepare for the challenge ahead. In addition to enhancing their reading skills, students also focus on improving their writing abilities. A key component of the competition involves short answer essays that encourage them to become more proficient writers.\r\n\r\nWith your assistance, my students will develop into more proficient readers and writers. The excitement on their faces said it all—they felt seen, celebrated, and connected to something bigger than themselves. \r\n\r\nThe tunnel has become more than just a fun addition to our events; it's a powerful symbol of the positive direction we are heading with our house system.
