Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember my first experience with tofu. I was in 3rd grade we read about it and then my class made soup and ice cream with it. This is an experience I will never forget. These are the types of experiences I want to give my students.
I teach 22 inquisitive/ hands- on second grade students in a low income area of Connecticut.
Our school has almost 600 students. My class has special education students and students who are english language learners. Most of the families are single parent households with the parent holding down multiple jobs.
My Project
Most students come in with chips or cookies, if anything, for a snack. Parents do not have time to cook with the kids at home, let alone time on money to make sure their child is eating healthy meals. We learn about nutrition in science. We have a nutrition program for the students. I would like to incorporate cooking into our reading, science, and math and teach them how to measure and mix their way to healthy meals. Programs out there such as FEED USA are showing us how important it is to teach students about healthy living at a young age.
You could help my students find their love for cooking, while learning more.
They will also start their healthy living. Your donation will take our class one step closer to fighting childhood obesity. I will never forget what I learned while cooking in my class and I want the same experience for this class.
