Are you fascinated looking at how the color of leaves change or how a tiny bird playfully jump from one branch of a tree to another?
The 6th grade Science students I teach at a Title 1 school would really be interested to go outdoors and observe and identify trees and birds in their community. Most of these students came from different elementary schools in the city and most of them live in apartment buildings and have limited exposure to nature studies. We are a college-bound school and we encourage students to start planning their career choices as early as 6th grade.
Our school is located about 15 minutes from a park where the students can look at trees and birds and identify them using Book-field guides. They can observe a bird perched on a tree just outside the window of our classroom through binoculars and identify them using the bird field guide. A walk in the park is a welcome avenue for teaching students different science concepts and skills.
To be able to identify trees and birds, my students will need Book-field guides to trees and birds of North America and binoculars. Students will benefit from these materials by doing field activities which will enhance their observation, classification, data-gathering, interpretation and analysis skills. All these skills are essential for students to improve on their scientific literacy.
Your help in funding this project will change the way my students view science learning. Instead of being confined in the four walls of the classroom, they can go out and view things clearer with their binoculars and give names to things they commonly see around but have no clue as to what they are called. These materials also expose students to a variety of activities that will sustain their interest in science which hopefully will transform into career choices in the future.
