Learning Through Literature

My students need 31 picture books by famous authors including Mem Fox, Eve Bunting, Donald Crews, and Greg Tang.

Grades 3-5

“You cannot write for children They're much too complicated. You can only write books that are of interest to them.” Maurice Sendak (author of Where the Wild Things Are). In my fifth grade high-poverty classroom, students enter with hundreds of problems on their mind each morning. With students preoccupied with personal difficulties, lessons must be taught in a creative fashion to keep their attention on learning basic math facts or techniques to improve their writing.

My fifth graders enjoy the personal connection of a picture book and are extremely attentive during any read aloud time. Through the use of picture books, I have been able to teach many different concepts and excite my students about writing, reading, math, and science. This interest catapults students into exploring more about their world, striving to become better writers and mathematicians, and learning about topics the stories discuss. With a very limited budget, I have not been able to purchase new picture books for the classroom in several years. I would like new picture books to expand on the lessons I have incorporated into the year and increase the number of examples students have to learn from.

Our classroom needs new picture books that connect math and writing to literature, provide examples of techniques they can implement in their own writing, and teach mathematical concepts in a way that is fun and exciting to them. The picture books selected are texts that lend themselves to several lessons apiece and will be used frequently in the classroom throughout the school year.

Your donation will help my students learn math and writing through the power of picture books. While keeping their interest and allowing them to escape the realities of their home lives; you will help my students focus on math concepts and writing techniques. Your donation will truly make learning fun for these fifth graders and engage them in reading, writing, and math.
