Learning Through Listening

My Students

In rural Northern Maine, I teach about 110 students at a small community centered high school. These young adults inspire me to, not only do my very best to prepare them for life beyond high school, but to create creative content that appeals to a variety of learning styles and interests.

My students are creative, curious, and ready for a challenge.

They work well together but are also motivated individuals. They are engaged in their learning, always striving to make real-world connections that help them grow as students and as individuals. Their enthusiasm, humor, and kindness create a learning environment that is accepting, rigorous, and thought-provoking.

My Project

My public speaking students need headphones to watch example presentations. Students often learn best when they are able to see the skills they are practicing modeled. Students would be able to use these headphones to watch examples of public speakers in order to see the skills they are learning about in practice.

Headphones would also give students an ability to record their own presentations to watch later.

Hearing their own presentations gives them the opportunity to reflect on their own skills and recognize their strengths and weaknesses. One pair of headphones will serve a student throughout their entire public speaking course.

Our school is located in rural Maine where half of the students are economically disadvantaged. They are often unable to come to school with the basic school supplies. Providing headphones for each student would not only give students an opportunity to choose a unique learning method but would give each and every student an equal opportunity to find academic success.

These students are dedicated to improving their skills in public speaking and providing them with headphones would give them an opportunity to learn from examples and reflect on their own learning in order to grow as presenters.
