Our school is a Title I school located in the Oklahoma City area. My students are in a self-contained, special needs classroom the majority of their day. They are well-below grade level in Reading and Math. The students are one-to-one with iPads, which enhances the students’ learning through technology. Although they participate in whole group reading activities overall, the students’ reading comprehension improves when something is read to them. Keeping them engaged is the goal. My student are eager to learn.
My Project
My students struggle with math and reading. Therefore, the reading can impair the math. My students need headphones to hear their iPad read to them. Having 15 iPads reading aloud at the same time is very distracting, and these students already struggle to focus. We currently use a math program on their iPads that reads the problems to them, so the reading does not affect their ability to complete their work. This provides a better opportunity for my students to focus on the math problems and their reading comprehension. It also improves their learning success as well as their self-confidence. The goal is to improve their reading which can also improve their math.
