My Students

My students are all Amish in a K-8 building. I have 5th- 8th graders for Social Studies. I also teach 2nd grade Math and 7th grade Science. They love to learn about the world we live in now and how it was in the past for Social Studies class. They are so eager to learn and love to work with their hands. I don't have discipline problems and they are just so happy to be in school this year with everything going on in the world. We have some technology here at school, but since they are Amish they don't have much if any access to the Internet at home.

My Project

With teaching 5-8 Social Studies, a lot of content is covered. Geography is one of our main components in 5th and 6th grade. In all those grades we are studying all different parts of the world. In 6th grade we study Indian Early Civilizations and study the Taj Mahal. In 8th grade we talk about the US government and Washington DC.

My Amish students have not traveled out of the country and some haven't even traveled out of the state of Ohio, and they have not seen the White House or the Taj Mahal in person and a lot of them never will.

Each year we make paper models of these, but they are hard to build and don't look very accurate. There are so many more details and it isn't just reading out of a book or completing a worksheet.

The interactive map that I included would be fun to build, but also educational at the same time. We can even highlight places we are studying with different colors of Lego dots. I feel that seeing miniature replicas of the White House and Taj Mahal that we can keep displayed in the room will make it more real life for them. They love building things so all the hands on work would be so enjoyable.
