This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school, we serve Pre-K and K students from a low income community. Many of the students have never been in a school setting before. Often the students speak another language other than English. The students face struggles with poverty, relocation, and language on a daily basis.

The students quickly learn academics, social skills, and many other skills necessary for the classroom, and at home.

Our job is not only to educate these students, but also help them grow as individuals and to create a safe and nurturing place for them.

My Project

This year we are creating a more developmentally appropriate curriculum for our Pre-K students. We will be focusing less on paper and pencil tasks and allowing for more opportunities to learn social skills and problem solving skills through guided play.

Dramatic play allows the students to use their imaginations, learn about different family dynamics (and other social skills) as well as learn to problem solve on their own.

Children are naturally curious and we as teachers need to foster that! These dramatic play items will make a big difference for my students who may have never had the opportunity to explore with these items at home.
