This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Established in 1979, our school provides educational and support services for children with hearing or vision loss in our school district. Some of the students have additional challenges that magnify the impact of the vision or hearing loss. Each of the students has special needs and requires extensive technology and assistance to succeed in a school setting.
Students attend classes at one of three locations.
In addition, itinerant services are provided throughout our district for students whose disability is not severe enough to require full-time placement at one of the campuses. Services are also provided in several area counties.
My Project
The students who attend our school love getting their hands dirty! This is one of the very crucial ways they learn.
Our school serves students with sensory impairments, so teaching is hands on ALL the time (even if it means getting dirty in our garden)!
The convert-a-benches will be used for our students to sit at while working on planting the vegetables and getting their hands into the activity. Once they have completed the outdoor lesson and are ready to sit back and relax and look at the progress their plants are making in their garden, they can!
The handprint stepping stones will give our students a way to leave their “handprint” once they graduate to middle school. The stones will be placed on the outside of the garden as a barrier walkway. We have an annual picnic in the Sping and invite our middle and high school students back for a day. This will be a wonderful tradition to start and encourage our younger students to strive for!
The soil and seeds will be used to teach the students how their food initially begins. They will be responsible for helping transplant the seeds into our raised handicap accessible flower beds and helping maintain the vegetables.
The garden gloves and tools will be used by the students to attempt to keep their hands clean and ready to dig with their new tools!
The outdoor storage unit will house the extra tools and materials needed to maintain a garden. This storage unit will also help with safety. Being a school that serves visually impaired students, we always try to ensure a safe environment indoor and outdoors at all times.
