Learning Through Games

My students need 5 games that will stimulate their thinking and reasoning: Monopoly, Art Sudoku (based on the classic in newspapers), two other strategy games and a versatile board game that can be used for up to 100 different games.

We learn as much from our interactions with others as we do from the academics. My fifth grade students come from all across the world, speak over 10 languages, and qualify for free lunches.

The students in my class who have completed all of their homework for the week earn "Friday Fun Time", half an hour on Friday afternoons where they get to play. The most popular activities during this time are board games, especially chess. I join in, and our whole class values the time we spend playing. Often, one game between two players gathers an audience even larger, so eight people share in the experience of the game. I always use these opportunities to discuss strategies that the students can use, and they begin to help one another.

My students would greatly benefit from more games in our collection. Many of them do not have the opportunity to play games at home. I would love to add Monopoly, Art Sudoku, Numero, Doubles Wild and a multi-purpose game board that will promise to always give my students a new game to play.

By contributing to this project, you will make sure that these children have had the opportunity to play. And, because of the play, their strategic thinking will improve. All because of a few games that you have donated! Thank you.
