Learning Through Dramatic Play!

My students need access to dramatic play items, puppets, dolls, costumes and blocks in order to learn about the world around them and how to interact in it. Dramatic play offers children opportunities to use their imagination and learn!

My Students

My students are an energetic and amazing group of three to five year olds who are all learning how to be in school for the first time. My classroom is an early childhood special education classroom with a specific focus on children identified as having Autism Spectrum Disorder.

My student's skills range greatly across the span of development and we strive to build educational opportunities that meet the needs of all of our students.

My student's typically have the greatest needs in the areas of communication, social emotional development and social communication skills. In our classroom we work hard to learn the routines and rituals of being in a school environment, we learn how to effectively communicate our wants and needs, and we learn how to interact and play with peers.

We want to lay the groundwork and functional skill development to prepare them for successful school experiences when they enter kindergarten.

My Project

My students need direct instruction on how to learn through play. Dramatic play is a way for our students to start to learn to use their imaginations. Often, my students like to play with the same toy in the same way. In our classroom, it is our goal to help them learn how to use toys in different ways, and in ways that support their use of problem solving, imagination, and connection to real life situations.

Using hand puppets and dolls, dress up clothes, blocks and kitchen props will help my students learn to play in new and different ways.
