This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
In kindergarten, we spend so much time teaching the basics: reading, writing, and math. Kindergarten is so academic now that there's scarcely time for any sort of classroom art experiences. I would like to incorporate artistic expression into my daily content instruction.
My students live in a high-poverty area of Indiana and many spend their leisure time at home in front of the television.
I've had a few that have never painted, or even held a crayon. Most have never been to preschool. They come to school lacking the most basic skills. I have budding artists every year - they are just waiting for opportunities for their talents to flourish! Our school is a small public school, and the budget is tight. We are provided with construction paper, pencils, crayons, and glue bottles for our students. Any other craft materials must be purchased out of the teacher's pocket.
My Project
The resources I have requested will help me create rich art experiences for my students to supplement our curriculum. I've requested paints and papers to allow my students to respond to literature creatively and demonstrate what they know about the differences in animals, to name a few activities. I've requested fabric pieces and that my students will use to create colleges in the style of some of our favorite illustrators. I've requested shells, jewels, foam shapes, and pasta pieces that my students can use to count, sort, and pattern in math as well as for craft activities. These materials, as well as some other basic supplies, will help to make our school curriculum more meaningful, and fun too!
Thank you for considering my project.
Without your help, I would never be able to afford these materials, and my students have so much to gain from art experiences, including self-confidence, pride, and the joy of self-expression. Your donation is much appreciated. Thank you!
