My Students
A typical day in my classroom involves a significant percentage of absences, non-academic issues and distractions. The students have serious challenges that get in the way of academic performance -- anything from general anxiety to chemical dependency.
I teach at an alternative school where students come when they have difficulties in the regular high school setting.
My students vary greatly in their abilities and motivations. Some come to the school because of external issues (bullying, family issues, anxiety) and some come because of substantial academic and behavior problems (chemical dependency, anger issues, lack of interest in school).
The students have the capability to succeed, but all of them have some challenge that is interfering with their academic success. They are good kids that are having trouble dealing with adult problems.
My Project
My students will use this material to design, print, test and revise several major 3d printing projects. Each project will involve a design phase where they become familiar with computer-aided design principles. After the design phase, they will print their designs on a Makerbot Replicator+ and then test their designs in the real world. The students will observe how their designs function and what improvements they can make.
These projects require multiple revisions based on real world observations (much more engaging to my students than a typical classroom), so we will need a considerable amount of filament.
Each project requires about 100g of material per student per revision.
