My Students

As a counselor at a low-income high poverty school where 98% receive a free or reduced lunch, my students are faced with many challenges in their classrooms and in their homes. Many of our students also come from bilingual homes and are building English language skills at school with limited support with school work at home. I am looking for creative resources to give them more meaningful experiences to help them develop good social skills, become more aware of the diversity of the world around them, build and a positive mindset to tackle their own obstacles to success.

At our school our motto is "We are Destined for Greatness!" In everything we do as a school, we try to build our student's belief in their own abilities.

So many of our students do not get the support they need at home and in my classroom we focus on skills to help them grow their emotional and social skills so that they they can be more successful in all their endeavors at school and home. My students have big dreams and need the tools to help them accomplish all of their goals!

My Project

Many of my students do not get to travel very far and have a limited view of the world. More than 80% of my students live in poverty and are not able to travel to other states, go to museums or participate in cultural enrichment. I hope to help them gain understanding of the vast diversity in the world around them through books like "Strickly No Elephants" and "The Big Umbrella." I want my students to be learn to promote inclusiveness through reading books like "Making a Difference: Teaching Kindness, Character and Purpose" and "Listening with My Heart: A story of kindness and self-compassion."

My students love to listen to stories and I want to make sure those stories reach beyond just the words and pictures and help build their character in positive ways.

Books like "I am human: a book of Empathy," "Stick and Stone," and "One" will encourage them to see beyond themselves to how they can connect to others around them.

I also want my students to grow in their self-awareness. We are learning mindfulness techniques to help with self-regulation of emotions and behavior. I want my students to be able to recognize when they are overwhelmed and need a break as well as when they are focused and ready to give it their all. Books like "Hello Brain?: A Book About Talking To Your Brain" and "Listening to my Body" will help students learn to recognize what their body is feeling and what it is telling them. Activities in "Mindfulness for Kids: 30 Fun Activities to Stay Calm, Happy, and In Control" will help them learn to take recognize and take charge of those feelings and be more in control of their actions.
