My students struggle to express their feelings, thoughts and needs. Many of our students are not taught how to deal with conflict, adversity and fears in ways that are healthy. Many lack good role models and respond well to activities and teachers that can engage and motivate them. Our students live in a highly impoverished area where many come from single parent homes. School is often one of the greatest sources of support and nurturing that our students have.
