My Students
I teach inner city high school students manufacturing, engineering and visual communications. Pittsburgh and its surrounding area is a manufacturing powerhouse in the United States. Brashear students come from many different backgrounds including refugees, ESL, and low economics. My position allows me a unique ability to educate students with the applicable skills they otherwise would have no chance to experience.
The increase in need for trade skills can even change their life trajectory.
The majority of my students have never used hand tools, power tools, or printing tools. When students enter my classroom they should feel safe, and confident around tools and machinery. The mindset of confidence comes from education and having the safest tools and machinery available.
My Project
These materials will allow my students that have not had much hands on experience the chance to take their designs that they create in Adobe Illustrator and print them with the intent of having physical goods!
The print industry plays a huge part in culture.
The best part of our school is the blend of cultures and ethnicities present in Brashear. This project will allow my students to explore their creative side and give them the ability to go through the process of creating their own shirts, cards and posters!
