This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Finding 32 novels for my students can be quite a challenge. For reading novels from beginning to the end has shown to help engage students which leads to better comprehension. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin will do just that for my students.

I currently teach a 5th grade, inclusion class filled with diverse students who are passionate about reading.

Even though our school is just a year old, materials are scarce and novel sets are even harder to come by. While our school literacy lab is stocked with novels, only sets of 6 are available. This just does not allow my class to have a common novel to read together or draw effective lessons from.

My Project

The diversity of my class can have its challenges. It is important to create a sense of unity and class direction with so many different learning styles. Therefore, having a complete novel set for my kids will give them both a challenging read and a book to discuss to together as a class. The complexity of this story's plot and the mystery of who will win the 200 million dollar prize of The Westing Game will give my students great insight into what great writing can be.

Ultimately, by challenging students to read books that have complex plots and multiple characters, The Westing Game will provide a fun and engaging way to improve literacy in my students.

This class will have opportunities to have lively discussions about who they think will win the the money and along with the sudden twists and turns reflective of such a well written book, will definitely keep them motivated to read more than they every have before.
