My Students

My students come from diverse backgrounds and face a variety of challenges at home and school. I have students who are English language learners, are homeless or highly mobile, and who receive free and reduced price lunch. I have students who were born in other countries, as well as who have lived in Minneapolis their entire lives. My students are at a variety of academic levels, ranging from new-comer to well above grade level. I work hard to meet all of my students at their levels and provide every child with the best education, as well as to build a classroom community that is welcoming, respectful, encouraging, and inclusive.

What we remember from our education is not necessarily the academic lessons, but the social skills and lessons.

This project will help support a library of books that can be used with my students throughout the year to introduce and discuss various topics around character and that value education. I want to help my students learn invaluable social skills which can help them be successful in various aspects of their lives.

My Project

My students need books that help teach character values and social skills. I have requested books like My Secret Bully, The Paper Bag Princess, Rude Cakes, Through My Eyes, Not All Princesses Dress in Pink, Brave Irene, and more. These books will provide an engaging way to introduce and discuss the importance of various social skills. Topics that will be taught and discussed throughout the year include bullying, sharing, perseverance, growth mindset, standing up for what's right, fighting for what you believe in, and manners. The variety of books, topics, and characters will allow students to relate and make connections to their own lives. My students will learn important social skills and build a strong classroom community, which will in turn help them academically. We will read these stories during out morning meetings, and engage in discussions about how and why the characters acted the way they did, and how we can apply the lessons to our own lives.
