Learning Social Skills & Higher Level Thinking Through Play
My students need supplies to learn through play to build social and higher level thinking skills including playdoh supplies, magnetic tiles, blocks, arts and craft supplies, Lincoln logs, Legos and a K-Nex set.
First grade is such a huge year for learning. They come in as little kindergarteners and leave second graders. The amount they learn in first grade can arguably be the most a student learns in one year in their entire educational career. They learn how to read, write, add, subtract and how to be a learner.
I teach in a low-income public school and have a high population of English Language Learners in my classroom.
This means that many of my students come to school without the adequate knowledge and experiences. They have a lot of catching up to do compared to a typical student. My goal is to do everything I can to decrease that gap and instill in them a love of learning.
My Project
Play is such an important part of learning and my first graders don't get to do it enough. My students do not know how to just play. They always have to be told how to play or they want to use the iPads. Because of this, they do not have the social skills or higher level thinking skills needed to be as successful as they can be in first grade.
"Play is the highest form of research." I want to provide my students with opportunities to just be kids; to play, to learn, to socialize, to practice thinking skills and to use their imaginations.
By giving them opportunities to earn play time, they will get to use the supplies in this project to build, pretend and create. I plan on having Friday Freebie Time where they will get to choose from the supplies in this project. They will get to build with Legos, Lincoln Logs, and K-Nex. They can create with Play-Doh and art supplies. And they can pretend with blocks and magnetic tiles. Sometimes we just need to let them be kids and I intend to do that with this project.
