I teach visual art to 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at the most amazing school. Aside from teaching art, I also try my best to teach love, compassion, acceptance, patience, and responsibility in my classroom. My school is extremely supportive in my efforts to help each student be their personal best.

My students need to be more responsible! I'm sure all teachers want their students to pick up after themselves, and this is especially important in the art room. When my classroom is visited by over 800 students creating a variety of different artworks each 12 weeks, it is necessary for my students to practice their clean up responsibilities. My classroom currently consists of over 30 students each class, 1 small broom, several trash cans, and lots of worn out sponges. I would like the opportunity to assign group responsibilities so that students can help clean up and share tasks with their friends.

I need multiple cleaning tools to give students the opportunity to become responsible for their classroom and share in the responsibility together. With multiple brooms and dust pans, cleaning wipes and sponges, I will be able to assign group tasks for an end of class clean up ritual for ALL students. Often times when I ask students to clean up at their tables, one or more students feel OK with letting other students clean up for them. With enough supplies, I can create a cleaning and reward system for my students that will strengthen their personal responsibility for their workspace. This will also create a better appreciation for art room and the materials within it. I hope that this system will instill a personal responsibility in my students that will stay with them into adulthood.
