Learning Poetry Devices with Sharon Creech Books

My students need the audiobooks as well as group sets of a variety of Sharon Creech books: Heartbeat, Love that Dog, and Hate that Cat.

My Students

The way to improve reading is to practice, practice, practice. My students want to improve their reading skills, and these three books by Sharon Creech: Heartbeat, Love that Dog, and Hate that Cat, will provide the opportunity for which to begin this process.

My students are in a high-poverty, urban school district.

Most are 2+ years behind in reading, decoding, and fluency skills. My students admit to not reading outside of the school setting, yet they realize that this skill must be improved to have a chance to reach their potential in life. My students are working hard in the classroom to increase their reading decoding and fluency levels.

My Project

Heartbeat, Love that Dog, and Hate that Cat are written in a user-friendly format. They represent poetry-type writing with stanzas. There are not too many words per page making the lay-out very appealing for struggling readers. These texts are a perfect way to cover the poetry devices of alliteration, similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeia while improving reading decoding and fluency skills. They also allow for the development of comprehension skills when kids have to apply prediction skills and look for symbolism throughout the texts.

My students are hesitant to pick up a novel to read because it looks overwhelming to them.

As reluctant readers, they are still afraid of failure. Research supports that one must read to improve reading skills. Heartbeat, Love that Dog, and Hate that Cat will provide my students with books that are reader friendly, so they can improve their reading skills. Thanks for giving my students the gift of reading!
